Raoul Paul M. de Longpre (French, 1859-1920) Still Life with Pink and White Roses Signed "Raoul M. D. Longpre" l.r. Gouache on paper, sight size 28 x 20 1/4 in. (71.1 x 51.4 cm), framed. Condition: Pentimenti or retouch l.r., not examined out of frame. N.B. Paul de Longpre was born in Lyon, France, in 1855. He was making a living through his art from the age of 12, when he was employed by a Parisian company to paint flowers on fans. At age 21, one of his paintings was accepted at the Salon in Paris. Having established himself as a successful artist, de Longpre moved to New York in 1890, and held a major exhibition there in 1896. He moved to Los Angeles in 1898, and built a Moorish style house with an elaborate garden featuring 4000 rose bushes. These roses were often the subjects of his oil or watercolor still lifes.
