Goodwin is one of the most well known sporting and wildlife illustrators. The greatest influence of his early training was Howard Pyle. It was through Pyle that Goodwin was commissioned to illustrate Jack London's Call of the Wild in 1903. Goodwin opened his own studio in New York the following year. There he created illustrations for Outdoor Life and Collier's Weekly, as well as covers for the Saturday Evening Post and numerous posters, calendars, and advertisements. As is true of many works by illustrators, Goodwin's original oil paintings for the illustrations and advertisements were destroyed or stored improperly, thus surviving oil paintings by Goodwin are relatively rare. Goodwin spent a considerable amount of time hunting and traveling out West, especially with his good friend and fellow painter Charles Russell.
