Paul Bransom had a successful career as a painter of animals and was called the "Dean of American Animal Artists." He was self-taught and worked as a draftsman before moving to New York at age 17 to work as a cartoonist. Throughout his career, Bransom created hundreds of animal illustrations for magazines and books, including Jack London's Call of the Wild and Kenneth Graham's Wind in the Willows . His paintings also appeared in the Seagram Sportsman Calendars. Bransom believed in painting from nature, and observed wildlife from his summer homes in the Adirondacks and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This work was reproduced as the November/December page of the 1951 Seagram's Sportman's Calendar.
