Federal Mahogany Upholstered Easy Chair, Massachusetts, 1790-1810, the serpentine crest above a canted back and outwardly scrolling arms, a serpentine seat rail and channel molded tapering front legs joined by square stretchers to the raking rear legs; the front legs have castors, old surface, 20th century blue upholstery, (some height), ht. 43 1/2, seat ht. 17 1/2 in. Provenance: Family descent from sea captain Nathaniel Kinsman, Salem, Massachusetts, who was involved in the China trade; see lot 60. Literature: American Furniture at Chipstone by Oswald Rodriguez Roque, University of Wisconsin Press, 1984, pl. 89 is a similar example of this rare form.
