The Howard Family Silk-on-silk and Metallic Work Coat of Arms, worked by Lucy Howard "1806 at the boarding house of Mary Balch - Providence," in various stitches on a silk ground including silk and gold and silver metallic threads and cords, forming a central shield with scrolling leaves as well as flanking chains above a garlanded ribbon which reads "By The Name of Howard," (minor staining, reframed), 23 1/4 x 23 1/4 in. (sight). Provenance: Lucy lived with her parents, Sarah Chaplin Howard and James Howard, along with her brother James, Jr., all depicted in the portraits in the preceding lot. Lucy subsequently married Darius Hutchins and lived in Abington, Connecticut. Note: This lot includes a letter from James Howard, Jr. (the baby sitting on his mother's lap in the preceding lot) to his sister Lucy Howard, dated "1806" and addressed to "Miss Lucy Howard at the boarding house of Mrs. Balch, Providence, Rhode Island." James Howard, Jr. was a student at Yale when he sent this letter "by mail." The purchaser will also receive a printed mounted catalogue sheet entitled "Catalogue of the Officers and Students in Yale College/November 1804/Rev Timothy Dwight," 21 x 18 in.
