American School, 19th Century Naive Landscape Painting of Howard Valley, in Windham County, south of Hampton, Connecticut, early 19th century. Unsigned. Watercolor on paper, showing the local landscape, including the Little River in the distance and Cohantig rocks, as well as the Howards' house on their land; in blues and greens with touches of white and orange, 10 1/2 x 15 in. (sight), in original gilt wooden frame. Condition: Good. Provenance: This naïve picture of a Howard family home in its setting was purchased from the Howard family 35 years ago by the consignor. The house in the foreground, which still stands, was purchased by the current owners from the Howard family about 20 years ago. Hampton, Connecticut was home to several naïve artists in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
