Chippendale Mahogany Carved Reverse Serpentine Desk, North Shore, Massachusetts, 1780-90, the slant-lid opens to an interior of valanced compartments and small drawers with a central fan-carved and blocked drawer flanked by document drawers with applied columns above four graduated drawers, the top one of which is arced and all with cockbeaded surrounds, above a conforming molded base with a central fan-carved pendant ending in ball and claw feet, original bail pulls, old surface, (minor imperfections), ht. 44, wd. 42, case dp. 21 3/4, overall dp. 23 1/2 in. Provenance: Family descent from sea captain Nathaniel Kinsman, Salem, Massachusetts, who was involved in the China trade; see lot 60.
