Chinese School, Mid-19th Century Ships at Anchor in Hong Kong Harbor, early 1860s. With illegible Chinese characters at lower center. Oil on canvas, this view of the island of Hong Kong shows the city of Victoria, as well as foreign shipping activity in the harbor, 17 1/2 x 23 in. (sight), reframed. Condition: Restored, laid down, craquelure, minor losses, varnish darkening. Provenance: Family decent from sea captain Nathaniel Kinsman of Salem, Massachusetts, who had such a significant involvement in the China trade, he owned a house in Macao, see lot 60.
