Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl (American, 1855-1932) The Artist's Self Portrait Unsigned, partial label on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 40 1/2 x 29 in. (103 x 74 cm), framed. Condition: Scattered bloom, varnish inconsistencies, surface grime, craquelure. Provenance: From the artist to fellow Boston painter, Max Hagendorn, then to the family of present owner. N.B. Hagendorn lived and worked in Sharon, Massachusetts. Born in Germany, he studied at the Royal Academy in Stuttgart. His work was featured at the 1904 St. Louis Exposition. According to family tradition, Gaugengigl has depicted himself in this portrait as standing in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, Massachusetts.
