James David Smillie, engraver (American, 1833-1909) After John F. Kensett (American, 1816/18-1872) Mount Washington From the Valley of Conway. Identified within the plate. Engraving with hand-coloring on paper, sight size 9 x 11 in. (22.9 x 27.9 cm), framed. Condition: Tears (possibly repaired) and creases within text, subtle rippling, not examined out of frame. Provenance: A private New Hampshire collection. N.B. This engraving copies the Kensett painting belonging to the American Art Union, and depicts the Champney House in the center of the composition. Kensett did several versions of this work and Currier and Ives also published a version, drawn by Fanny Palmer in 1861. The composition is often credited as the first view to make the White Mountains of New Hampshire famous.
