Attributed to John Carlin (New York City, 1813-1891) Portrait of William Stoughton Conant, Jr. (1844-1922) and his Sister, Gertrude Cornelia Conant (1848-1928), c. 1855, New York. Unsigned. Oil on canvas; Gertrude wears a white dress with matching pantaloons and blue shoes and carries a basket of flowers while her brother wears a three-quarter red velvet jacket over a white outfit and holds a hoop and stick, all in a landscape setting of trees, water, and grass, 51 1/4 x 43 in. (sight), in a replaced giltwood frame. Condition: Very good, relined. Note: John Carlin, a portrait, genre, and landscape painter, was also a miniaturist and writer who was born a deaf mute in Philadelphia. He studied under John Neagle in this country and Delaroche in Paris. He settled in New York City where he lived for 50 years, exhibiting at the National Academy and the American Art Union. Provenance: This portrait descended in the family and is consigned by Gertrude Conant's granddaughter. Gertrude was born in Brooklyn, New York, married September 20, 1865 to John Wesley Harway, and died June 6, 1928 in Bayside, Queens, New York, at age 80. Her husband's obituary read, "Mr. Harway was at one time one of the most successful businessmen of Queens." Their residence was a large estate in Bayside known as "The Gables."
