William G. Yorke (New Brunswick, Anglo/American, 1817-c. 1888) Portrait of the Cutter Melvina in a Yacht Race. Signed and dated "Wm G. Yorke, June 187-" l.l. Oil on canvas; the yacht in full sail on starboard tack flies an American flag and pennant with her name as well as the code flag "W" and is followed off her stern by a sailboat of the same class; this yacht race is probably in the New York City area, 21 x 27 in. (sight), unframed. Condition: Unrestored, tears and minor losses. Note: William G. Yorke and his son William Howard Yorke (1847-1921) both lived and worked as artists in Liverpool. By 1871, William G. Yorke had immigrated to New York, and this was reflected in many of his subsequent paintings and backgrounds. His biographies indicate he painted a substantial number of yachting scenes from the New York region, as this lot appears to be.
