John Appleton Brown (American, 1844-1902) May Pastures Signed "J. Appleton Brown" l.r., identified on labels from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Oil on canvas, 17 x 21 1/4 in. (43.2 x 54.0 cm), in a broad strip frame. Condition: Subtle surface grime, several minute spots of retouch, craquelure. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. N.B. John Appleton Brown was born on Boston's North Shore, and spent most of his time studying and working in the Boston area. Between his brief training in France and his associations with fellow Boston painters William Morris Hunt and J. Foxcroft Cole, Brown's style developed, showing the influence of the Barbizon school. Brown is best known for his pastoral landscapes depicting the bucolic New England countryside in soft pastel tones.
