Fred Pansing (German/American, 1854-1912) Portrait of the American Steamer Puritan . Signed "Fred Pansing" l.r., ship identified on the pennant and at midship as well as "Fall River Line" on the bow and with an American flag off the stern, c. 1889; this painting is painted in luminous colors with sharply drawn details as befitted one of the floating palaces which provided transportation with high class entertainment, sight size 21 5/8 x 35 1/2 in. Condition: Good, some retouch, relined, cleaned. Note: There were four sister steamer ships which provided a connection between Boston and New York by going from Boston to Fall River, Massachusetts, to Newport, Rhode Island, then to Long Island, New York. This was an excursion service with dance bands and opportunities to promenade. Fred Pansing was born in Bremen, Germany, in 1854 and emigrated to New York City in 1860, where he became a successful artist. He learned the details of ships by serving as a sailor. His work imitated that of the ship portraitist James Bard, Pansing's New York City neighbor. He also created marine illustrations for Harper's Weekly . Works by Pansing in oil on canvas are quite rare since he produced mainly illustrations and chromolithographs. Pansing, Jacobsen, Buttersworth, and the Bard brothers were considered New York City's best ship portrait artists.
