Queen Anne Mahogany Tall Case Clock, Gawen Brown, Boston, Massachusetts, mid 18th century, the hood with arched molded cornice and freestanding columns flanking a thumb molded glazed tombstone door opening to an engraved brass dial, the central boss engraved with a bird and "Gawen Brown Boston" flanked by cast spandrels with dolphins above the chapter ring, seconds hand, and calendar aperture with corner brass spandrels incorporating urns and eagles and eight-day brass weight-driven movement, the waist with molded shaped door on base with molded bracket feet centering a shaped pendant, old refinish, (imperfections), ht. 91 in. including finials. Provenance: Note affixed to clock interior "January 1st 1900 Gawen Brown, the maker of this clock, kept a shop in 1750 on State Street, where the Merchant's Bank Building now stands in that year he made a clock for Nathan Byles the first pastor of the Hollis Street Church, which is now the Old State House. He remained I think in that shop until 1780. Mr. Brown also built the clock in the tower of the old south Meeting House which is dated 1772. I believe it would appear from the above that this clock must be at least 125. Owned by William C. Pike of Boston, Mass. and at the present time is owned by his daughter Martha P. Purrill, 141 ... South Boston."
