Federal Mahogany Flame Birch and Rosewood Veneer Desk Bookcase, attributed to Judkins and Senter, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, c. 1813, the molded top with beaded edge above the three-paneled veneered frieze and two glazed doors with Gothic lancet panes which open to two adjustable shelves above tripartite flame birch veneer panels on the fold-out lined writing surface above similarly embellished cockbeaded long drawers over a central drop panel flanked by tall French feet on platforms, replaced brasses, (very minor veneer loss), ht. 64, wd. 40 3/4, dp. 20 1/4 in. Provenance: Family descent from Josiah Warren (1787-1870) of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, who married Submit Boyd Neal in Brookfield, New Hampshire, in 1812. Josiah and his wife spent their married life in Brookfield until Josiah's death in 1870. His widow lived the rest of her life with her son Charles Evander Warren, in his home in Exeter, New Hampshire, until her death in 1873. Family oral history places this Portsmouth desk and bookcase in Charles Evander Warren's Exeter, New Hampshire home when Submit Boyd Neal moved there in approximately 1870. Subsequently it passed to Solon Greeley Warren (1865-?) who lived in Exeter and attended the Phillips Exeter Academy and then moved to Boston.
