Federal Mahogany and Rosewood Veneer Bowfront Chest of Drawers, stamped "T. G. Moses," Portsmouth, New Hampshire area, c. 1815, the top with swelled front and crossbanded veneer inlaid edge overhangs the conforming case of cockbeaded drawers above the bird's-eye maple inlaid drop panel flanked by tall kicked-out feet on platforms with side shaping, old refinish, ht. 38, wd. 41, dp. 21 1/4 in. Moses (1787-1825), the original owner of this chest, was a tailor who had a home and shop on Congress Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1821; he subsequently relocated to Market Street. His stamping this piece indicates he was the owner, as he was of a secretary bookcase that was included in the Girl Scout Exhibition.
