Woven Wool and Cotton Thirteen-Star American Flag, 1830-60, the flag entirely handstitched with thirteen stars arranged with twelve in a circle and one in the center, appliqued to the deep navy blue canton on the obverse and the blue cut away within the stitches of each star on the reverse, canvas hoist with handwritten inscription "G. W. Chatfield Elm St." in ink, (repairs, losses, stains), approx. 70 x 95 in. Note: Accompanying the flag is a label which gives some information about its age and use. It is said to have been "made before the Civil War... draped at Lincoln's assassination also Garfield [and] McKinley's." It may have been displayed as an expression of grief at a home or business as many flags would have been at that time.
