Hollow-cut profile head and watercolor bust-length body on paper, the figure is wearing a comb in her hair, a black dress with ruffled collar and belt, a black beaded necklace, with a black fabric background behind the head, sight size 3 3/8 x 2 5/8 in., in an embossed gilt-metal and wood frame. Condition: Toning. Note: An inscription on the reverse reads "Puah Mellon Oct. 1807-Jul. 1844 Wife of Lewis Putnam Married April 7 1830 Mother of Jane Putnam (Curtis) Mary Putnam (Fay) Only picture we have," A genealogical search identifies the sitter as Puah Mellon, born around 1806. She was the second wife of Lewis Putnam, was married March 6, 1830, and lived in Grafton, Massachusetts.
