Edward Wilbur Dean Hamilton (American, 1862-1943) Poppy Fields Signed "E. W.D. Hamilton" l.l. and l.r., inscribed and dated "...89" l.l., label from T. Gilbert Brouillette Gallery, New York, on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 in. (50.8 x 60.9 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch. Provenance: A private New England collection. N.B. Especially known for his landscape and garden views, Hamilton spent most of his artistic life in and around the Boston area. He spent 1887 through 1889 training in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts with Jules Eli Delaunay and the Academie Julian, under the tutelage of Bouguereau. He exhibited in the Paris Salon from 1889, the date of the lot presented here, to 1891.By 1892 he had a studio in Boston, although he traveled periodically, summering regularly in New Brunswick, and returning to France several times. Poppy Fields unifies the strongest elements of his style: his exposure to the Paris of the Impressionists and his life long affiliation, as both student and teacher, with the Boston circle of painters.
