George Hitchcock (American, 1850-1913) Pandora Signed "G. HITCHCOCK" l.l. Oil on canvas, 26 x 22 in. (66 x 55.8 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, abrasions to skirt, surface grime. Provenance: A private Rhode Island collection. N.B. Originally working as a lawyer, Hitchcock left his law practice in 1879 to pursue a painting career. He started his studies at the Academie Julian in Paris and then moved on to other academies in London, Dusseldorf, and The Hague. Rarely returning to the United States after that, Hitchcock became known for his views of peasant woman and flowers, marked by bright, radiant light - a style highly influenced by the Impressionists. In 1909, Hitchcock was elected as an associate member of the National Academy of Design and was the first American to be admitted into the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste, Vienna.
