Attributed to Joseph Whiting Stock (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York, 1855) Pair of Portraits of the Thayer Twins, c. 1846. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, both views of the seated young women include red drapery, blue dress trimmed with lace, a glimpse of a river with landscape details, a scrolled figured maple sofa arm, and a red and gilt book; Miss Thayer (A), probably Irene Elizabeth, holds one red rose and is twenty-four years old, while Miss Thayer (B) probably Adeline Maria, twenty-two, holds two red roses, 30 x 25 in., in replaced grain painted frames. Condition: Good, unlined, revarnished, minor craquelure, and very minor paint loss. Provenance: An attached note reads: "The family consisted of the following five girls: Irene Elizabeth 1822, in 1846 24; Adeline Maria 1824, in 1846 22; Suriah Howe 1827, in 1846 19; Eliza Ann 1829, in 1846 17; Mary 1832, in 1846 14. Literature: Both portraits are pictured in The Paintings and The Journal of Joseph Whiting Stock, edited by Juliette Tomlinson, Middletown, Connecticut, 1976, and are also listed on p. 73 as "Miss Thayer, late 1840s and Miss Thayer's twin, also known only as Miss Thayer is listed below.
