American, circa 1820. Classical Philadelphia carved recamier, fainting couch or chaise lounge mahogany with poplar secondary wood, with foliate carved crestrail, the ends scrolled carved terminating in rosettes with padded, upholstered ends and removable cushion, raised on tulip inverted legs headed with anthemion carved blocks. Height 36.25", width 75", seat depth ", seat height 13.5". Provenance: According to the consignor, this recamier was purchased in 2000 from a member of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Board. The sofa had descended in her family since it was made in the early 1820's. Family tradition says the piece was made for a wedding gift in Philadelphia where the family hails from.
