Miles Patent Brass Whale Oil Lamp and a Tin Student Candle Lamp, England, late 18th/early 19th century, the brass lamp with embossed "MILES PATENT" on font; the student lamp with an adjustable candle holder and pierced shade, removable snuffer, brass ring finial, on a weighted dish base, traces of black paint, (candle holder loose from drip pan), ht. 7 1/4, 19 in. Note: John Miles of Birmingham, England, was granted a patent in 1787 for a lamp with a totally enclosed font that would not readily spill when agitated.
