Attributed to Alfred A. Hart (American, 1816-1906) Leading the Cows to Drink by the Mill. Signed "A. Hart 1848" l.r. Oil on canvas, depicting a boy on horseback on a country lane with cows watering next to a mill with mountains and lake in the distance, 28 5/8 x 35 in., later frame. Condition: Laid down onto masonite, retouch to background. Note: Alfred Hart was born in Norwich, Connecticut, in 1816. He moved in 1848 to Hatrford, where he lived for a number of years and exhibited there and in New York City. He later moved west, first to Cleveland, Ohio, then to Sacramento, California, where he worked as a photographer for the Central Pacific Railroad. He moved to San Francisco in the 1870s and exhibited his portrait paintings at the San Francisco Art Association (1872-1878) and received a gold medal at the California State Fair in 1872.
