Genealogy Needlework Sampler, "Wrought by Charlotte Perkins AE t 12 Years Aug. 12 1819," probably Maine, silk threads on a linen ground, listing the vital statistics of Ezekiel Cushing and Frances (McCobb) Cushing and their six children, and Benjamin Perkins and Frances (Cushing) Perkins and their five children, beginning in 1752 and ending in 1808, lower reserve with a monument and a weeping willow commemorating the deaths of two family members, next to a house, a figure with sheep and a dog, a town can be seen across the river in the distance, all enclosed by a border of flowers, foliage and a bowknot, (toning, losses, stains), 24 1/4 x 21 in., unframed. Note: A genealogical search locates this family as coming from areas around Phippsburg, Georgetown, and Bowdoinham, Maine. Similar stylistic elements on this sampler compare with other samplers from Maine in the book Girlhood Embroidery, by Betty Ring, Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1993, pp. 249-61, such as the stylized rose-vine border, solidly worked scenes in the lower sections, and the subject of genealogy.
