Pewter Quart Mug, Jacob Whitmore, Middletown, Connecticut, c. 1750-75, flared cylindrical form with fillet, S-scroll handle with bud terminal, molded base, rare rose mark to interior base, round rose touch, [Laughlin 382], ht. 5 7/8 in. Provenance: Ex Ledlie Laughlin collection. Literature: This mug was illustrated in Pewter in America: Its Makers and their Marks, by Ledlie Laughlin, Barre Publishers, Barre, Massachusetts, 1969, figure 120 on plate XIX, and touch mark figure 382, on plate LIV. Note: John Carl Thomas commented on this mug in a note dated August of 1997 saying "This quart mug by Jacob Whitmore is one of the finest 18th century Connecticut mugs I have seen, and perhaps the finest by this maker...both metal and mark are in superb condition, and make this particular mug a key piece in identifying others." This signed note accompanies the lot.
