Pewter Porringer, Gershom Jones, Providence, Rhode Island, 1774-1809, round form with boss bottom and flowered handle, partial circular lion mark [Carl Jacobs 176 or 177], (minor wear), dia. 5 3/8 in. Provenance: Ex Ledlie Laughlin, with collection label retained on the base. Note: John Carl Thomas remarked on this porringer in 1993, "As for the porringer, again, more stories... the marks of the planishing hammer used to finish the handle are so very clear on the reverse of the handle...super big and clear linen mark and typical of Jones, the mark struck very well, but a bit cocked to the side so some fades away. The lathe finishing marks in the bowl and on the back are super...I really don't think you could find a much better example of this form. I was able to clean around the Laughlin label and cover it so that it can remain for as long as you want-or forever..."
