American School, early 19th century, Portrait of Jane Dalzell Mercer (Parker) (b. 1805), 1820s. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, the sitter pictured in partial profile seated in a red upholstered armchair, wearing a blue dress with a sheer lace shawl, and a lace bonnet with matching blue ribbon, as well as three pieces of gold jewelry: earrings, a double-stranded necklace, and a ring, sight size 29 1/2 x 24 1/4 in., in original giltwood frame and stretcher. Condition: Excellent, minor craquelure, old cleaning, minor abrasions. Provenance: Direct family descent from the sitter, who lived in Philadelphia, to the consignor. Exhibitions: Minneapolis Institute of Arts in the 1930s.
