Carved Ivory Plaque of General (Mad Anthony) Wayne, America, late 18th/early 19th century, round plaque with relief carved three-quarter view bust length portrait of the General, with a banner below inscribed with his name, houses and foliage in the background, (age crack), dia. 3 7/8 in., in a conforming molded wood frame. Note: American Revolutionary War Brigadier General Anthony Wayne (1745-96), was popularly known as "Mad Anthony" because of his impetuous and hot-headed temper. He served in Canada in 1776, and at Brandywine and Germantown in 1777. During the winter of 1777-78 he was encamped at Valley Forge. His most successful achievement was the victory of a surprise night attack on the strongest British post on the Hudson River at Stony Point, New York, July 16th, 1779.
