Attributed to Joseph Goodhue Chandler (Massachusetts and New York, 1813-1884) Portrait of the Dibble Twins, 1839. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, depicting Ellen Sophia Dibble (1837-1913) and Eliza Maria Dibble (1837-1906) in full-length pose wearing red dresses and matching pantaloons, square-toed black slippers and holding a gray tiger cat and a basket of red cherries, respectively, both with serious demeanor, 39 1/2 x 35 3/8 in., in a replaced grain painted frame and original stretcher. Condition: Unrestored, darkened varnish, small patched hole. Note: A paper attached to the reverse identifies the twins and their ages. The artist, J. G. Chandler, is recognized by his use of square-toed shoes, volumetric faces, square-fingered hands, highlighted knuckles, and accentuated mouth and brow bones. He is known for both a primitive and more accomplished style. Provenance: From the collection of Oliver and Marion Deming.
