Rare Low-back Red Oak and Maple Chair, Essex County, Massachusetts, 1665-95, the square back joins square stiles which continue to the floor and are joined to the front block and ring turned legs and turned feet by similar square stretchers, the front medial stretcher is boldly turned, old 19th century leather, (imperfections), ht. 36, seat ht. 15 3/8 in. Note: Wood by microanalysis is red oak, ash and maple. Provenance: This chair, which descended in the consignor's family, came from the home of Deacon Nathaniel Whipple on the Main Road, Hamilton, Massachusetts. "Deacon Nathaniel Whipple, b. October 1721, Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts, married 1744 and died December 1809 in Hamilton, Essex, Massachusetts." The "skin" or leather was bought by another ancestor Willis H. Ropes (1855-1946), Ropes Street, South Salem, and put on the old oak frame at Salem Fraternity by Herber Farwell according to an accompanying note. Family genealogy accompanies this lot.
