Attributed to Junius Brutus Stearns (New York City and Brooklyn, 1810-1885) Portrait of Stephen Brewer, 1820s. Unsigned, oil on panel, the half-length profile of the young man contrasts his dark hair, eyes, and coat with his white collar points and cravat. (sight) 28 x 23 1/2 in., in original gilded pine frame. Condition: Good. Provenance: The sitter "drowned in Haydenville in the Le... River" according to a note affixed to the reverse of the panel. Note: Junius Brutus Stearns, born in Arlington, Vermont, and died in Brooklyn, New York, was best known for his portraits, although he did genre and historical paintings as well. He was a student, an exhibitor, and finally an associate and the secretary at the National Academy of Design in the mid-19th century.
