Fine Lever-Wind Overture Musical Box by Nicole Freres, No. 43552, circa 1873, playing four overtures from Zampa, Aida (Potpourri), la Gazza Ladra and Va Pensiero , with smooth brass bedplate, brass control panel, (later) engraved silvered tune programme and carrying handles, in rosewood case with red interior, inlaid to front and lid with brass, ebony and pewter arabesques in tulipwood borders, wd. 22 in., cylinder 12 x 3 1/8 in., (one early bass tooth replacement). Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Thomas Standish, Wigan, England, sold at Christie's South Kensington, 17 December 1998, lot 96. Thomas Standish was born in 1900 and lived in Wigan all his life, his working life spent in his father's furniture and upholstery shop V. Standish & Son (est. 1890). He was a life-long collector of antiques, including musical boxes, which he packed into every corner of his tiny house.
