Attributed to Henry Schreiner Stellwagen (American, d. 1866) Return of Governor Roberts, Monrovia, Africa, c. 1841-44, Unsigned. Watercolor on paper laid down on brown paper, several rowboats flying various flags arrive at a beach landing with troops and onlookers, a row of houses visible on a ridge at left and two three-masted ships in a cove at right, inscribed "Return of Gov Roberts. Monrovia, Africa" u.r., and "Return Gov Roberts Monrovia" l.c. 6 1/2 x 10 1/2 in., unframed. Condition: Slight toning. Note: Joseph Jenkins Roberts was the first black governor of the African colony of Liberia, appointed by the American Colonization Society in 1841, after the death of Thomas H. Buchanan. Roberts served as an unofficial aide to Buchanan, a white man who sought the return of American freedmen to Africa. In 1848, Roberts was elected the first president of the independent state of Liberia.
