Attributed to Henry Schreiner Stellwagen (American, d. 1866) Ship at Sail. Unsigned. Watercolor on paper, showing a ship in choppy water flying an American flag; the verso with pencil sketch showing a ship's crew in a heated disagreement, two men with guns held to sailors' heads, and interested onlookers beyond, inscribed "18th Sept. Lat 9'58' North after being becalmed for several/ days nearly all the time Weather very hot--," 6 3/4 x 9 3/4 in., unframed. Condition: glue and brown paper residue on reverse, pencil sketch slightly smudged in places. Note: Latitude 9'58"N, the location referred to in the pencil sketch on the reverse of this watercolor, is roughly the latitude of Panama City and Caracas, Venezuela, and it seems likely that Stellwagen produced this sketch (and, therefore, the watercolor) during one of his first voyages, to the Caribbean.
