Attributed to Henry Schreiner Stellwagen (American, d. 1866) Two Watercolor Views of Valparaiso. Unsigned. The first watercolor on paper, showing two men on horseback in the foreground overlooking a hillside harbor city with dozens of ships at anchor, inscribed lower left "Valparaiso Chili [ sic ]," dated and identified on the reverse "Valparaiso July 3rd & 4th 1851/Frigate Savannah," 6 3/4 x 10, unframed, (small loss u.r., glue residue on reverse); the second, watercolor on paper laid down on brown paper, showing two uniformed men among buildings, with bay below, inscribed on brown paper above image "Tops of Sailor Boarding Houses, Valparaiso, Chili [ sic ]," 9 1/2 x 6 3/4 in., unframed (glued to backing). Note: Valparaiso, the second largest city in modern day Chile, is also Chile's main seaport. Its naval history is quite rich, and was a major port-of-call for European ships sailing from Europe to America's west coast.
