Gilded Cast Bronze George Washington Portrait Medallion, Thomas Dow Jones (1811-1881), New York, late 19th century, the medallion centered with an oval convex bust-length profile portrait of George Washington, the molded bronze frame topped with a bowknot, the bottom with another bowknot flanked by oak leaves and acorns and laurel leaves, with partial molded maker's mark "Thomas Dow Jones Sculp. N.Y." l.c. Note: Thomas Dow Jones was a noted sculptor and medallionist, receiving commissions from several major American cities. In 1853 he was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy. His famous works include medallions of Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and a marble bust of Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase, which is now in the Supreme Court Building.
