Attributed to James Barton Longacre, (American 1794-1869) Portrait of the Marquis de Lafayette. Unsigned. Sepia wash drawing on paper, depicting a three-quarter view bust-length portrait, 6 7/8 x 4 7/8 in., in a molded birds-eye maple frame. Condition: Minor toning, stain, and fox mark. Exhibited: The Hermitage: Home of Andrew Jackson. The Nation's Guest: Lafayette Visits America. May 19- August 8, 1993. Note: An ink inscription on the reverse reading "Gen. Lafayette by Earl at the Hermitage," wrongly attributes the work to Ralph E.W. Earl. An examination of the work was done in July of 1989 by Robert G. Stewart, Senior Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the National Portrait Gallery. He attributed the drawing to James Barton Longacre. This attribution and several items of correspondence by a previous owner regarding the drawing and its origens are included in the lot.
