Painted Child's "American Eagle" Sled, paint decoration attributed to Henry A. Gage, Manchester New Hampshire, 1858, red painted bird's-eye maple and pine mortise and tenon constructed sled with applied iron straps to the runners, the top painted with the initials "A.R.S." and ornamented with an eagle, shield and flag motif and the year "1858," the sides with black outlined yellow lettering "American Eagle," the top and sides further embellished with yellow scrolled foliage and striping, the tip of one runner signed "Gage Painter," the underside inscribed "Simmons," (scattered paint wear), ht. 5, wd. 10 3/4, lg. 43 3/4 in. Note: A note affixed under the seat relates historical information about the sled's owner and painter by a New Hampshire historian. He concludes that the sled belonged to Albion R. Simmons of Manchester, New Hampshire, and probably received it as a present when he was 14 years old. Simmons became a soldier in the Civil War, and later was a photographer and a lawyer.
