American School, 19th Century Portrait of a Boy in Red with a Hoop. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1840, 37 x 25 3/4 in., unframed. Condition: Tears, abrasions with paint losses, areas of canvas loose from stretcher. Provenance: By family descent through Lillian Poe Wagner of Georgetown, Pennsylvania, to the consignor. Andrew Poe, a distant relative of the consignor is renowned for his battle with two Indians at the mouth of Tomlinson Run in the Ohio River valley in 1781, and subsequently killing one after being severely wounded in the wrist. The painting likely depicts a Poe family member.
