Diminutive Cherry Carved Tall Case Clock, William Crawford, Oakham, Massachusetts, late 18th century, the hood with a molded swan's neck cresting with carved pinwheel terminals centering a brass finial on a molded keystone extending through a molded arch above the glazed thumbmolded tombstone hinged door, opening to a floral engraved brass dial inscribed in the arch, "Wm Crawford Oakham," above the chapter ring and calendar aperture and brass weight-driven movement with drop strike, above concave and bolection molded waist with shaped thumbmolded door all on molded base, old finish, (imperfections), ht. 83 in., including finial. Note: According to a letter written in 1934 by the Town Clerk of Oakham, the clockmaker "marched as Sergeant of the Oakham Company, when it responded to the alarm of July 23, 1773, from Rhode Island, and also Sergeant on the alarm of Aug 20 1777, from Bennington. He has also credit for a campaign to Boston, beginning April 1, 1778."
