Robert Wood was born in 1889, in Sandgate, England, the son of a Victorian painter, and showed early promise as an artist. He immigrated to the United States early in the 20th century, traveling across the country, painting and working as a laborer to support himself. He finally settled in San Antonio, Texas. Here he studied art seriously for the first time, under the Spanish artist Jose Arpa. It was in Texas that Wood produced some of his most well known paintings, such as his famous scenes of blue lupine, or Texas bluebonnets, like the field pictured in this painting.
