Two Photographs of Sarah Tufts, a sixth-plate daguerreotype of Sarah Tufts and her young daughter Mary, in gilt mat and leather case with embossed Bird of Paradise on the lid; and a fully-tinted photograph of Sarah Tufts in oval walnut frame. Provenance: Images acquired from the Tufts family estate. Sarah Tufts was the daughter of Rhoda Webster and Thomas P. Tufts, founder of Tufts University. Her husband, Kohler, fought and died for the Union in the Civil War, and their daughter, Mary, is shown in the daguerreotype portrait. Sarah owned a seamstress business in Salem, Massachusetts, which she operated under her maiden name.
