Near-Miniature Brass Plain Surveyor's Compass by Smith, Young & Co. , with 4-inch silvered dial engraved New York, Warranted below a ring of foliage, fleur-de-lis at North, needle ring divided 0-90 in four quadrants, threaded clamp on lifting arm, baluster-form limb with vials (one broken) and staff-mount, lg. 12 1/2 in., (needle and hub replaced, lacking sights). Note: Although unmarked, this compass appears identical to a documented instrument by Smith, Young & Co. of Maiden Lane, New York. The little-known partnership between Henry Young of Sing-Sing and William Henry Smith of New Rochelle, traded under the name for only five years.
