Steiner Bisque Figure A Bebe, impressed Steiner, Paris, Fre. A 7 , with closed mouth, fixed blue paperweight eyes, feathered brows, pierced ears with one pink bead earring, original blonde mohair wig over carton pate, and jointed papier-mache body with straight wrists, in the original rose silk brocade jacket with pink satin lining, knee-length skirt with net-lace overlay, matching bonnet, underclothing and white leather shoes, ht. 14 in., (bodice fragile).Provenance: The doll was originally owned by the seller's maternal great-grandmother, Emma Louise Holbrook (1871 - 1946). According to family legend, Emma and her mother, Mary Parker Holbrook, traveled to Paris, whey the doll was purchased. It is also possible that the doll may have been a gift from her (then) fiance, Edward Almon Nelson (whom she married in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1895), a bicycle racer who visited Paris in 1894. An early photograph (not included in the Lot) taken in Springfield c. 1903 shows Edward and Emma's children, Laureena Majorie and William Holbrook Nelson with the doll. See the following lot for Laureena's Steiff bear.
