Roullet et Decamps Waltzing Paysan Automaton, with out-sized papier-mache character head, painted blue eyes, smiling mouth, rosy complexion, curly brown hair wig, and metal hands, on velvet-covered base containing the going-barrel movement playing two airs and causing the figure to turn in a circle, kicking his left leg back and forth, bending from the waist and looking around in an exaggerated manner, in whiute ribbon-striped red and yellow silk breeches, waistcoat, cream satin jacket and hat, ht. 21. Depicting a French country farmer with remarkable cariacature-like modeling of the head, the Paysan was illustrated in Roullet and Decamps' catalogue as the companion to "Copurchie", a similar figure depicting a dancing dandy. Provenence: Jerry Cohen Collection, Sotheby's, London, 1994.
