Note: Automobile pioneer Benjamin Briscoe (1867-1945) was an inventor and manufacturer of sheet metal products, who with his brother Frank, employed 1000 workers in the Briscoe Manufacturing Company. They backed David Buick with $100,000 and then sold their interest in the Buick operation. Benjamin Briscoe joined Jonathan Maxwell in forming Maxwell-Briscoe Motor Car Company in 1903. Briscoe organized United States Motors, eventually embracing 150 companies and producing 28 models under seven trade names. U.S.M. crashed in 1912, and in 1913 Briscoe bought out the car bearing his name. After World War I he developed the process for refining oil and mined gold in Colorado.
