American School, 19th Century Portrait of Captain Henry Blackler of Marblehead, Massachusetts. Unsigned. An inscription on the frame reads "Henry Blackler aged 28". Oil on canvas, c. 1820, 29 x 23 1/4 in., in a later molded gilt gesso frame. Condition: Relined, minor retouch l.r. Provenance: According to Old Marblehead Sea Captains and the Schooners They Sailed by B.J. Lindsey, Marblehead Historical Society, 1915, the portrait of Capt. Blackler "was owned by Mrs. Wm. Gerry Keene of Lynn, Mass." The consignor is Mrs. Keene's great grandson. Note: Captain Henry Blackler was born September 25, 1791, in Marblehead and died at Martineco (Martinique) in 1816. In 1811 he was master of the schooner Hero and then captain of the brigantine Ruthy when he died. He was the son of Captain William Blackler, who was in charge of the boat that carried General Washington across the Delaware in 1776.
