Federal Mahogany Carved Shield-back Side Chair, Salem, Massachusetts, circa 1791, attributed to Salem cabinetmaker Jacob Sanderson (1757-1810) with carving attributed to Samuel McIntire (1757-1811), consisting of two cross-hatched baskets of fruit with trailing vines, one at the top of the shield, the other at its base flanking neoclassical foliate carving on the curving splats with molded supports above the serpentine front rail and tapering legs joined by "H" stretchers; old refinish, (minor imperfections), ht. 38, seat. ht. 18 in. This chair, numbered "IV," may well be part of the set made for the Fiskes of Salem by Jacob Sanderson, the artisan and Samuel McIntire, the carver, as described in the literature below. Literature: Samuel McIntire: Carving an American Style by Dean Lahikainen, Peabody Essex Museum, University Press of Hanover, London and New England, 2007, pp. 52-55, describes and pictures a chair in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum that is stylistically the same as this lot. Our above attribution is therefore based on the information provided in the publication. The book states that page 54 pictures a chair made by Jacob Sanderson for Major General John Fiske and his wife Sarah of Salem. That chair also had a central basket of fruit with a trailing vine, consistent with McIntire's later carving and identical to this lot.
